Wine and Evernote on Linux: A Frustrating Experience

As a Linux user, I was excited to discover that there is an Evernote Beta app available for my operating system. However, my enthusiasm was short-lived as I soon realized the limitations and challenges of using this app. In this article, I will share my experience with trying to import notes from another notebook structure into the Evernote app on Linux, and the difficulties I faced along the way.

My journey began when I decided to switch to a new device, and I needed to transfer my notes from an old Evernote notebook structure to the new one. I was hoping that the process would be seamless, but unfortunately, it wasn't. After searching online for solutions, I found out that I could export whole notebooks in the Evernote format, which allowed me to recreate the structure on the new device. However, this method had its own set of issues.

Firstly, the original notebook structure was lost during the export process, leaving me with a jumbled mess of notes without any organization. Secondly, after importing the notes into the new app, I realized that all my notes were categorized under default notebooks, which made it difficult to find specific notes quickly. To make matters worse, the app has a limitation of 50 marked notes, forcing me to import and organize my notes in small batches.

Another issue I encountered was the constant redirection to the Windows Store when trying to access certain features or update the app. As a Linux user, I couldn't install any additional software or updates from the store, which made it even more challenging to resolve the problems I faced.

I also tried using other note-taking apps like Nixnote and Tusk, but they had their own limitations. Nixnote exports notes in an nnex file format that cannot be imported into Joplin, despite what the FAQ claims. Tusk allows importing notes as HTML or Markdown files one by one, which is not practical when dealing with hundreds of notes.

After researching online and trying various solutions, I stumbled upon a thread on the Joplin forums where other users were facing similar issues. Unfortunately, it seemed that there was no straightforward solution to resolve these problems.

In conclusion, my experience with using Evernote on Linux has been frustrating and challenging. The limitations of the app and the lack of suitable alternatives have made it difficult for me to achieve my desired level of organization and productivity. As a Linux user, I hope that future updates will address some of these issues and provide a more seamless note-taking experience.
